# [Usage](../../../usage.md) > [Components and standard attributes](../basics.md) > Column span

`columnSpan` | `->setColumnSpan()`

Set the number of columns the component should occupy in the parent container if it supports `columns` attribute.

| Types     | Default |
|-----------|---------|
| `integer` | `1`     |

Used by children inside a container that defines `columns` (`Form`, `Repeater`, `Tabs`, `Card`). It controls how many grid columns the child spans. When omitted it defaults to `1`; values larger than the parent `columns` clamp to full width.
Essential for mixed layouts (e.g. one wide textarea beside two small inputs).

### Example
Blade:
```php
{!! \KFramework\Components\Forms\Input::make()->setName('bio')->setColumnSpan(2) !!}
```
Controller:
```php
Form::make()->setColumns(2)->setSchema([
    Input::make('first_name'),
    Input::make('bio')->setColumnSpan(2),
]);
```

### Interaction / tips
- Requires a parent `columns` (../shared_attributes/columns.md) value > 1 to have visible effect.
- Combine `schema` (../shared_attributes/schema.md) + `columns` + `columnSpan` as a trio for grid layouts.
- For footer layouts use `footerColumns` (../shared_attributes/footer_columns.md) + `footerSchema` (../shared_attributes/footer_schema.md) instead.
