# [Usage](../../../usage.md) > [Components and standard attributes](../basics.md) > placeholder

---
`placeholder` | `->setPlaceholder()`

It will set a placeholder for the `Form` component when no `value` or `default` is set, useful also in `Select` component to not selecting anything.

Can be both a boolean or a string, if boolean, the default value of placeholder will be used for the component.

| Types               | Default |
|---------------------|---------|
| `string`, `boolean` | `false` |

Ghost hint shown inside empty Form fields (`Input`, `Select`, `TextArea`). Displays only when both `value` and `default` are empty. When omitted (`false`) no placeholder shows. Pass `true` for the component default text, or a string for custom text.
Especially useful on `Select` to show an unselected prompt.

### Example
Blade:
```php
{!! \KFramework\Components\Forms\Input::make()->setName('email')->setPlaceholder('you@example.com') !!}
```
Controller:
```php
Input::make('email')->setPlaceholder('you@example.com');
Select::make('city')->setPlaceholder(true);
```

### Interaction / tips
- Shows only if `value` (../shared_attributes/value.md) and `default` (../shared_attributes/default.md) are empty.
- For persistent help use `hint` (../shared_attributes/hint.md) or `label` (../shared_attributes/label.md).
- Accepts Closures for dynamic prompts.
